ELABORATE
"...Elaborate is the retro vision of the future....”
A moving image exhibition that I created, lead and curated, featuring the work of 50 designers and filmmakers. This acclaimed exhibition was open to the public and also to all students and staffs from Central Saints Martins. We transformed the Lethaby Gallery into a futuristic lab inspired by Edison’s Menlo Park Laboratory. From the tools we use to the methods we apply, Elaborate played with perception, observation and identification and blowed up our preconceived notions of what is moving image. Moving Image is in a state of relentless re-invention. Confusing, tortuous, complicated, extravagant, intricate, complex and detailed. Beside the exhibition and the symposium which took place during for 5 weeks, I have also hosted talks for the public which explore the future of Moving Image through the lens of its past. That is, evolutions in technology result in a relentless revolution in Graphic Design. From the tools we use to the methods we apply, Moving Image is in a perpetual state of re-invention. By harnessing this uncertainty, designers pioneer new ways of communicating and connecting with information, audiences and experiences. From science to art to literature to consumerism, these radical, dynamic and exciting developments impact on virtually all aspects of the human experience.
PROJECT
The festival includes a large exhibition entitled Elaborate: Retro Vision of the Future in the Lethaby Gallery, but also features a large mix of screenings, lectures, talks, workshops and events. Elaborate is created, curated and produced by Esteban Gitton and transforms the gallery into a lab reminiscent of Edison’s Menlo lab work space. The work and investigations of new moving image artists are densely packed in the space, examining new ways of communicating and connecting.
SYMPOSIUM
Elaborate is a form of laboratory where “creative agencies can experiment and produce....”
The Elaborate Symposium presented a space through which to explore connections between art and science, looking back to the renaissance in order to re-connect art and technology as indistinguishable fields for research with an aim to perpetuate a connection. Moving image is not just moving, it is moving fast.
CURATION
Moving Image encompasses a wide array of design practices. Design is seen to be in a continuous flux between the various mediums that aid its creation. This exhibition was intended to bring together all disciplines that use moving image in some ways or another. It's purpose, to showcase a very wide range of work that celebrates and promote moving image. I selected some time based artworks but not always screen based. Creativity can spur unexpected results in the use of moving images, such as interactions, performances and a more traditional animated video mixed with something else.
