PROCESS

An exploration of the subcultural creative workspace and creative output of Nairobi's Matatu industry

CONCEPT

The idea for Matatuism started out as an installation showcase aiming to tell a different story of Africa. I intended to highlight and celebrate contemporary urban youth culture in an African metropole. Spanning across research and creative practice, the project attempted to bring exposure to some often overlooked and untold stories of the African continent. I was hoping to produce interesting and engaging content for the communities who are at the very core of Matatu culture and its cultural impacts as
well as reaching a new audience.

BRIEF

The research I invested in this project has proven to be very valuable. What I have discovered during the dissertation process translated easily into my practice. Having been to Nairobi to investigate the world of the Matatu myself I now realise the
output of my creative practice can only really function as an access point to this incredibly multi-layered creative subcultural landscape of the Matatu.
